The heroines of High Fidelity and About a Boy may have corresponded a little too closely to the ideal fantasy girlfriend, but they were funny, smart and faced challenges unrelated to coupledom Nick Hornby was a pioneer of Lad Lit, a 1990s comic sub-genre that chronicled the arrested development of the post-Baby Boomer male, but unlike many of his contemporaries, his laddish heroes were coupled with believable, vivid female characters.
